If it wasn’t for them, I’d still be wondering. After more than 4 years with them, I was able to take a few months off from working on my blogs this year when we had a family health crisis, without my income was not affected.

If you’ve done your keyword research then you are ready to register a domain name. I like Keyword Avalanche’s Godaddy service. They have some great prices. But you can use anyone.

I’ve heard it’s best not to register your domain with a hosting service in case you ever leave that host. By registering your domain names at Keyword Avalanche’s Godaddy or Name Cheap you can easily change your name servers to whatever hosting account you happen to be using at the time.

It’s kind of fun to try for different domain names. You can try names without dashes or with dashes. You’ll notice this domain name has dashes in between the words.

I’ve heard that it’s best to try to get your main keyword as close to the beginning of the name as you can, with no more than 4 characters before it. For instance, acmedogsite.com would be better than worldwidedogsite.com because there are only 4 characters in acme.

You also want a name that will get clicks when it appears in the search engines. You want a name that clearly states what the site is about and is easy to remember.

You might also try to get a site that people might just happen to type out in the address bar. For example, someone might type in “dogcare.com” or “dogbreeds.com” just to see what comes up if they are looking for dog information.

Keep in mind that you might want to register a domain name that could eventually be sold. “jims-fly-fishing.com” might not sell as well as “fly-fishing-tips.com” a few years from now when you have a page rank of 6 or 7 and some decent traffic coming in.

If you want to keep the site forever, then it doesn’t matter if you include a personal name in there. Of course, if the site has become popular and become sort of a brand, then it won’t matter so much if it’s “jims-fly-fishing.com” or “fly-fishing-tips.com” since the buyer is buying a brand along with the site.

So play around with some domain names. If you find one that isn’t taken, keep typing in more until you have several to choose from. They are so cheap I often purchase 2 or 3 similar names and then decide later which I like best. You can always hold onto the others in case someone offers to buy them.

You could also get two names that are similar and put a redirect at the one that points to the one you are going to use. “diamonds4you.com” could point to “diamondsforyou.com” so that you get people who type in the numeral 4 and the people who type out the word “for.”

Once you have the domain name(s) you want to buy, create an account and make the purchase. It’s that simple.

The next step is to get a hosting service so you have something to point your new domain name to. But that will be discussed in the next post.
